Cultural Compilations is an independent blog with a mission to highlight new research in culture, society, and the human experience. The blog features summaries, reviews, news and media coverage, and other content focused on cultural contexts. While its pieces are grounded in the social sciences, Cultural Compilations is committed to writing for readers from all backgrounds, scientific or otherwise.
A note on terminology
Cultural Compilations uses the term ‘culture’ loosely. While there is no set definition, culture is often used to describe the sets of norms, symbols, rituals, behavior, beliefs, and knowledge associated with a particular community, region, or country. Nevertheless, cultural knowledge is learned (i.e., socialized), multidimensional, and deeply embedded in our everyday lives. It informs how we organize our communities, our everyday habits, what we wear, what we eat, how we speak, what we know, what we share, and much more. It is also the stories we tell about ourselves.
